OVERVIEW
A river port that became lake living
Louisville is a small town on the north edge of Blount County, wrapped by Fort Loudoun Lake and sitting between Maryville and Alcoa on one side and West Knoxville on the other. It is mostly shoreline, larger lots and quiet roads, which is exactly why people come looking here.
It was not always quiet. Settlers entered land here at the end of the 1700s and cut the town site out of dense forest. From 1835 to 1845 Louisville boomed, and it became by far the most important town on the south bank of the Tennessee and Holston rivers, serving as the port for all the country between Little River and the Little Tennessee. Everything moved by water then, and Louisville was where it moved through.
Then TVA finished Fort Loudoun Dam in 1943, the river became a lake, and Louisville became what it is now. Here is the honest trade off, and I will not dress it up: there is no real commercial center here. You will drive to Alcoa, Maryville or West Knoxville for groceries, dinner and almost everything else. What you get in exchange is water, space and quiet, and for the right buyer that is not a compromise at all.
Living in Louisville
The places I actually send people. Louisville sits between Maryville, Alcoa and the Northshore side of West Knox, so a good bit of this is a fast drive rather than a walk, and I have said so where that is the case.
Bring the Dogs
Louisville Point Park
3298 Cox Rd, 37777
Sixteen riverside acres at the end of Cox Road, with a big pavilion, a playground and plenty of room to wander on a leash. My favorite spot in town for an evening walk.
Poland Creek
Lowes Ferry Rd, 37777
Lakefront, low key and rarely crowded on a weekday.
Maryville Alcoa Greenway
Bicentennial Greenbelt Park, 409 N Cusick St, Maryville, 37804
Just outside 37777, and worth the short drive when you want paved miles instead of a loop.
Get Outside
Louisville Point Park
3298 Cox Rd, 37777
A boat ramp, a swimming area, a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits and picnic tables with grills. This is the town’s front porch.
Poland Creek Campground and Recreation Area
Lowes Ferry Rd, 37777
A 34 site campground leased from TVA, with a boat launch, restrooms and both lakefront and lake view sites. Nice to have this in your own town when family visits.
Fort Loudoun Lake
The whole reason to be here. Boating, paddling and fishing from spring straight through October.
Eat Local, Worth the Short Drive
Louisville itself is quiet. Maryville, Alcoa and Northshore are all a fast drive, and between them you have a better lineup than most towns this size ever get.
Foothills Milling Company
315 S Washington St, Maryville, 37804
Downtown Maryville, and my answer when the occasion calls for something a little nicer.
The Walnut Kitchen
606 High St, Maryville, 37804
The one I recommend most often. Worth a reservation.
Lakeside Tavern
10911 Concord Park Dr, Knoxville, 37922, Northshore
Right on the water on the Northshore side. A short run for a Louisville address and always the easy sell to visitors.
Northshore Brasserie
9430 S Northshore Dr, Knoxville, 37922
French, and a genuine occasion restaurant.
Hot Rods 50’s Diner
373 Hannum St, Alcoa, 37701
The other end of the spectrum, and just as necessary.
Coffee, Worth the Short Drive
Vienna Coffee House
212 College St, Maryville, 37804
A Maryville institution and my standing recommendation for anyone moving to this side of the river.
Southern Grace Coffee
312 Tedford St, Maryville, 37801
The other one I send people to. Between these two you have your mornings covered.
Things to Do
Get on the water
Boating and paddling on Fort Loudoun Lake is the whole calendar here from spring through fall, and nobody who moves here regrets buying the boat.
Fishing
Bank fishing at Louisville Point Park, or launch and go find your own spot.
Sunset at Louisville Point
3298 Cox Rd, 37777
Bring a chair. This is the thing I tell people to do on their first evening in town.
Shop
Downtown Maryville
Neighborly Books at 106 E Broadway Ave, 37804, and the boutiques around it. A genuinely pleasant afternoon.
Alcoa
Everyday errands and the bigger stores, minutes away.
Roadside markets
Seasonal, unpredictable and worth pulling over for. Keep cash in the console.
Give Back Local
The Blount County Animal Center at 233 Currie Ave, Maryville, 37804 covers this whole side of the river, and they are lovely. Adopt if you are ready, foster if you are not, and donate or volunteer if neither is the right fit this year. All of it helps, and it is one of the easiest ways to feel like you live here rather than just having moved here.

Questions people actually ask me about Louisville
What ZIP code is Louisville?
37777. And yes, this is Louisville, Tennessee, in Blount County. Set your search filters carefully or you will end up looking at Kentucky.
Is Louisville part of Knoxville?
No. Louisville is its own town in Blount County, which means Blount County services and taxes, not Knox County and not Knoxville city. That is a real difference and it belongs in your budget conversation, so bring it up with me early.
How is the commute?
Louisville sits between Alcoa Highway and Pellissippi Parkway, which is why it works for people who need West Knoxville, downtown or the Maryville and Alcoa employers. Which of those routes you take changes the answer completely, so drive yours on a weekday morning before you fall in love with a house.
Do I have to buy waterfront to enjoy the lake?
Not at all, and this is one of my favorite conversations to have. Waterfront, lake view, deeded access, community dock and a five minute drive to a public ramp are five very different price points and five very different lifestyles. Tell me how you actually plan to use the water and I will tell you which one you really need.
Where do people actually go for dinner and groceries?
Alcoa and Maryville, mostly, with West Knoxville in the other direction. It is a short drive and people who live here stop noticing it within a month. I would rather you hear that from me now than discover it after closing.
Thinking about Louisville?
Let’s talk before you tour. Lake property has its own set of questions, and I would rather answer them for you up front than after you are under contract.
