OVERVIEW
The side of the river people used to drive through
South Knoxville sits across the Tennessee River from downtown, reached by the Gay Street and Henley Street bridges, and it runs south from there along Chapman Highway. 37920 carries most of it. Sevier Avenue is the walkable commercial strip closest to the water, and the further south you go along Chapman the more the ridges open up and the more rural it feels.
For a long stretch this was the side of the river people crossed on their way somewhere else. What changed that is the Urban Wilderness, a connected network of trails, parks, quarries and old fort sites stitched across the ridges, with Ijams Nature Center anchoring the middle of it. Hundreds of acres of trail inside a city, reachable from downtown in minutes. That single thing turned a quiet quadrant into a genuine destination, and Sevier Avenue grew up right along with it.
Two honest notes before you tour. First, bridges. Everything from here into downtown crosses the river, so a closure or a backup changes your morning in a way it does not on the west side. Second, terrain. It is steep in places, and that shows up in driveways, yards, retaining walls and what a lot actually looks like in February. Neither one is a reason to skip South Knoxville. Both are reasons to go look in person, which is my favorite kind of problem.

Give Back Local
Young Williams Animal Center is the one I point people toward here. Adopting is the obvious way in, but fostering, donating and volunteering all count, and fostering in particular is a real option if you are not ready to commit forever. If you are landing on this side of the river with trails out your back door, you are going to want a hiking buddy anyway.

Questions people actually ask me about South Knoxville
What ZIP code is South Knoxville?
37920 covers most of it, which makes searching here refreshingly simple compared to the rest of the county.
What exactly is the Urban Wilderness?
It is a connected system of trails, parks, preserves, old quarries and historic fort sites across the ridges of South Knoxville, linked together so you can move between them on foot or on a bike. Ijams, Baker Creek Preserve and Fort Dickerson are the pieces most people start with. It is the single biggest reason this side of the city changed, and it is genuinely rare for a city this size.
Is South Knoxville inside the city limits?
Partly. The neighborhoods closer to the river are inside the city. Keep going south along Chapman Highway and you cross into unincorporated Knox County, which changes property taxes and services. Always worth confirming on the specific address rather than assuming from the ZIP.
How is the commute downtown?
Short, and that surprises people. The Gay Street and Henley Street bridges put you downtown quickly. The catch is that everything funnels over the river, so a bridge closure or a backup on Chapman Highway is felt more here than a slow road is felt on the west side. Drive it on a weekday morning before you commit.
Is the terrain going to be a problem?
Sometimes, and I would rather flag it now. Steep lots mean steep driveways, retaining walls and yards that are more view than usable space. That is not a dealbreaker, it is just something to look at with open eyes, and it is one of the reasons I want to walk the property with you rather than talk about it from photos.
Thinking about South Knoxville?
Let’s talk before you tour, and then let’s go walk a trail and a couple of houses on the same afternoon. That is the only way this side of town makes sense.
